School Visits and trips to Westminster

Free guided tours of Parliament are available to constituents. The walking tour of the Palace of Westminster includes -

  • Westminster Hall, the ancient hall at the heart of the Palace where Parliament first sat and where many historic events have taken place
  • The House of Commons, including the Speaker's Chair and the famous green benches and the 'lobbies' where MPs actually vote
  • The House of Lords, including the Royal Throne
  • The Queen's Robing Room, Royal Gallery and many other fascinating parts of the Palace of Westminster

Please note that tours are very popular and places are limited so generally have to be booked about six months in advance.

Every year MPs welcome hundreds of school students to Parliament. The usual format is a coach trip, arriving in London during the morning for a free walking tour of the Palace of Westminster.

I always try to meet visitors and constituents to talk about the politics and history of Westminster, the work of an MP and about local issues. The best numbers are 10-30 on each visit; repeated tours from the same school are acceptable. Unfortunately, I cannot meet travel costs.

Visits to London can also take in nearby London sights such as Tate Britain, the National Gallery or the London Eye before heading home. There are often free educational exhibitions in Parliament.

The best day for a tour is a Tuesday when Parliament is sitting (October to July).

I have welcomed students and teachers from schools including Great Wilbraham Primary, Over Primary, Soham Village College, King's Ely, Fen Ditton Primary and Soham Village College.

I also carry out a programme of school visits throughout the constituency. The visits are a good opportunity for students and teachers to talk to me about issues and for me to see the school at work.

Tours need to be booked months in advance, so please contact me if you would like to visit Parliament, or if you would like me to visit your school.
